How Stripe Works for Venues: A Plain-English Guide
Updated February 2026 · 8 min read
Most ticketing platforms collect payment from your ticket buyers and then pay you later — sometimes days, sometimes weeks. Stripe flips this model. With Connect, payments go directly to your own Stripe account. The ticketing platform facilitates the transaction but never holds your money. Here's how it works, step by step.
The Traditional Model: Platform Holds Your Money
In the traditional ticketing model:
- Buyer pays $25 for a ticket
- Platform collects the $25 and holds it
- Platform deducts its fees ($2–$5)
- Platform sends you the remainder days or weeks later
You're dependent on the platform to release your funds. If the platform has cash flow issues, changes its payout schedule, or freezes your account, your revenue is at risk.
The Stripe Model: Direct to Your Bank
With Stripe-powered ticketing:
- Buyer pays $25 for a ticket
- Stripe processes the payment and routes $25 directly to your Stripe account
- Stripe deducts standard processing (2.9% + 30¢ = $1.03)
- Optional: a small platform application fee is deducted (varies by plan)
- $23.97 lands in your Stripe account → available in your bank in 2 business days
The ticketing platform never touches your money. It uses Stripe's "destination charges" to route payment directly to your connected account.
Onboarding: What You Actually Have to Do
Connecting your Stripe account takes about 10 minutes. Here's the process:
- Click "Connect Stripe" in your ticketing platform settings
- You're redirected to Stripe to either log into your existing account or create a new one
- Stripe asks for business info: legal name, address, EIN/tax ID, bank account for payouts
- Identity verification: Stripe may ask for a photo ID and a selfie (required by financial regulations)
- Done. You're redirected back to the ticketing platform. Future ticket sales go directly to your account.
If you already have a Stripe account (from your bar POS, merch sales, etc.), you can connect that same account. No need to create a second one.
Fee Breakdown
| Fee type | Who pays | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Payment processing | Deducted from sale | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Platform subscription | Venue pays monthly | $49–$250/mo |
| Application fee (optional) | Deducted from sale | 0–2% (plan-dependent) |
| Stripe fee | Platform pays Stripe | $0 (no extra charge to venue) |
Note: The application fee is how some platforms charge a small percentage per transaction in addition to the subscription. On VenueVault's paid plans, this is configurable and can be set to zero.
What You See in Your Stripe Dashboard
Every ticket sale appears in your own Stripe dashboard as an individual transaction. You can see:
- Buyer's email and name
- Transaction amount and fees
- Payout status and bank transfer date
- Refund history
This transparency is a major benefit over platforms where your revenue appears as a lump-sum payout with no transaction-level detail.
Refunds Through Stripe
When a refund is needed, the ticketing platform initiates it through the Stripe API. The refund comes from your connected account's balance. If there's insufficient balance, Stripe debits your bank account. This is exactly how refunds work with any direct Stripe integration — transparent and immediate.

Security and Compliance
Stripe is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified — the highest level of payment security. Your ticketing platform never sees or stores credit card numbers. All sensitive payment data stays within Stripe's infrastructure. As a venue, you inherit Stripe's compliance without needing to handle any payment security yourself.
Bottom Line
Stripe gives venues financial independence from their ticketing platform. Your money goes to your bank, on your schedule, with full transaction visibility. Combined with flat-fee ticketing, it creates the most cost-effective and transparent setup available for independent venues.
